SC Issue Notice On A Plea Seeking Direction To All Insurance Companies To Provide Medical Insurance For Treatment Of Mental Illness

The Supreme Court today has issued notice on a plea seeking direction to all Insurance companies to provide medical insurance for treatment of mental illness . Section 21 (4) of the Act provides that “every insurer shall make provision for medical insurance for treatment of mental illness on the same basis as is available for treatment of physical illness.”

This came two days after actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death by suicide sparked off a debate around mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

The PIL further slammed insurance regulator for “bypassing responsibilities”, alleging that IRDAI is not serious about providing protection to people with mental illness.
